French President Emmanuel Macron first imposed a strict lockdown on 17 March 2020, and the country began to slowly ease restrictions from 11 May.

On 14 June, he announced that France had won the first battle against the coronavirus. He further announced that schools would reopen from 22 June, except for high schools. He also significantly eased travel restrictions and allowed travel to other European countries. The European Union had recommended that the member states fully reopen their frontiers with each other on 15 June, and many countries, including France, have eased travel restrictions from 15 June 2020.
