Joe Biden had revealed that he was arrested on his attempt to see Nelson Mandela in 1970 but later denied the incident stating he was only detained. The U.S presidential candidate Joe Biden had stated that he was arrested during his trip to South Africa in 1970 while trying to see Nelson Mandela. He had affirmed that he was arrested along with the then U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, in his speech on February 11, 2020, in his South Carolina Launch Party in Columbia.

However, Biden and a deputy campaign manager later recanted the story on February 28, 2020, stating that he was not arrested but was only held up at the airport for refusing to use a whites-only entrance after arriving in the country.

Since there is no other evidence or statements given by any other officials on the incident, it cannot be accurately asserted whether he was arrested or detained.
