Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. Department of Defense to withdraw most army personnel and assets out of Somalia by early 2021.
Somalia has been facing civil war since 1991, and the U.S. had deployed its troops to fight the extremists. The U.S. has about 700 troops deployed to train the local forces and assist in fighting the ISIS group al-Shabab.
The Pentagon termed the new orders as repositioning its personnel and assets outside Africa and clarified that it would not disengage the U.S. relations with Africa. The U.S. will continue to support Somalia through a whole-of-government approach. The statement said the U.S. policy is unchanged; it will continue fighting violent extremist organizations while ensuring its support to the African partners.
