There is no evidence that Asif, one of the accused in Bengaluru communal riots, was arrested while he was out to buy coriander leaves at 1 a.m.Bengaluru's communal conflict, triggered after Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy's nephew P Naveen's derogatory social media post, had resulted in widespread violence across DJ Halli Police Station on August 11, 2020.

In the probe, police officers had arrested several suspects involved in the riots, using the CCTV footage as a source of evidence. Dozens of women had assembled outside the DJ Halli Police Station on August 17, 2020, demanding the release of their relatives whom they claimed to be innocent. The police had initially attempted to clear gathered women, insisting that none of the innocents were arrested in the case.

Speaking to the reporter of Suvarna News 24X7, a woman named Shahin had claimed that her brother Asif, one of the arrested persons who is a vegetable vendor, was out at 1 a.m in the midnight to purchase coriander leaves for his shop. She had also stated that her brother was at home during the riots.

There is no evidence to suggest that the cited reason for him being out after midnight is genuine and the investigation on this matter is ongoing.
