It is a North-Eastern state in the New England region of the United States. The government had four electoral votes since it first participated in 1792, except in the 1910s and 1920s when it had five electoral votes.

The Democratic Party has dominated politics in Rhode Island. For the past five decades, Democrats have been in power. Since 1928, Rhode Island has voted for the Republican presidential candidate only four times, twice for Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956, once for Richard Nixon in 1972, and once for Ronald Reagan in 1984. Since 1934, it elected only one Republican, former Governor John H. Chafee, to the US Senate. In 1984, Republican Edward DiPrete was elected governor.

From 1900 to 2020, Rhode Island presidential election results have seen 21 Democratic wins and 10 Republican wins. The Presidential voting history can be seen in Ballotpedia with Democrats indicating blue and Republicans indicating red.
