Statue of Liberty was made of copper, but due to oxidation, it changed its colour to green.

Articles by the National Park Service and The New Yorker confirm the claim.

Articles by the National Park Service and The New Yorker confirm the claim. The Statue of Liberty was originally made up of copper. The Statue's copper had naturally oxidized to form a "patina" green coating. Copper is a noble metal, which means that it does not react readily with other substances. At the Statue’s unveiling, in 1886, it was brown but by 1906, oxidation had covered it with a green patina. The thin layer of oxidation that covers copper (and bronze, an alloy made mostly of copper) can preserve the metal for centuries, even millennia.
