Around 172 million Americans spent about $8.8 billion in towards celebrating Halloween in 2019. Halloween is a holiday celebrated at the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.

According to the annual report by the National Retail Federation (NRF) conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, American shoppers spent nearly $9 billion on holiday in 2019. An average shopper spent $86.27 in 2019, which is down slightly from the 2018 record of $86.79. It brought down the total spending from $9 billion in 2018 to $8.8 billion in 2019. The 2019 total was expected to be the third-highest in the survey’s 15-year history, after the record $9.1 billion set in 2017. A total of 172 million people planned to celebrate Halloween in 2019 – 68 percent of those surveyed – down from 175 million in 2018.

A report from another organization, CompareCards by LendingTree, also revealed that nearly 48% of the age group 23-38 purchased Halloween items strictly for social media posts. The study also indicated that 31 percent of millennials spent more on Halloween than any other holiday.
