Context

On May 7, 2023, a Facebook user posted a picture of London Mayor Sadiq Khan walking hand in hand with a burqa-clad woman in front of the King’s Guard with the text, "Looks like the Mayor of #London was out with one of his other wives today... #SadiqKhan." However, this is an altered photo shared with a false claim.

In Fact

Logically Facts used a reverse image search and discovered that the original image shows Sadiq Khan attending the National Thanksgiving Service with his wife Saadiya Ahmed Khan at St Paul’s Cathedral on June 3, 2022, in London. Khan’s wife can be seen walking past a group of the King’s Guards. She is wearing a brown pant-suit, not a burqa.

Other images from the event show similar scenes. In one image, taken by Samir Hussein for WireImage, both can be seen passing the King’s Guard. In another image taken by Neil Mockford for GC Images, the mayor and his wife are depicted walking past the guards, with the mayor waving his hand.

There is no record of Khan being married to more than one person. Additionally, according to U.K. law, "To be recognized as legally valid, all marriages which take place in the United Kingdom must be monogamous and must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the relevant legislation."

The Verdict

An altered image of London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been shared with a false claim. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.
