The 1998 Cua hostage crisis video is misattributed on social media as that of a police sharpshooter taking out an ISIS terrorist in Spain.A video showing a man holding a woman at gunpoint and later shot dead is making rounds on social media since 2017 in India. The caption said that an ISIS terrorist, with a kidnapped woman, was shot dead by Spanish police sharpshooters.

On April 5, 1998, in Cua, Venezuela, an 18-year-old Hector Duarte, who came to rob a bakery with a revolver, took a woman hostage after his robbery went wrong and threatened to kill her. For seven hours, the police engaged him in a stand-off. The stand-off eventually ended when a sniper shot Duarte in the head, killing him and saving the hostage.

The television channel Venevision filmed the death of Hector Duarte on camera. The video resurfaced in recent years with an inaccurate description.
