California State Epidemiologist urged COVID-19 vaccine providers to stop distributing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine due to possible allergic reactions.Dr. Erica S. Pan, California State Epidemiologist, issued a statement advising providers to pause the administration of lot 041L20A of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine due to possible allergic reactions that are being investigated. Dr. Erica has said that their goal is to provide the vaccine safely, swiftly, and equitably. A higher than the usual number of probable allergic reactions were reported, with a particular lot of Moderna vaccine given at one community vaccination clinic. Fewer than ten individuals needed medical attention over 24 hours of the vaccination. More than 330,000 doses from this lot were provided to 287 providers across the state. The shipments reached California between Jan. 5 and 12.
Further, the department suggests providers use other available vaccine inventory and stop administering vaccines from Moderna lot 041L20A until the inquiry by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, Moderna, and the state is complete.
