Biography of Bernie Sanders and the news by BBC confirm that Bernie Sanders is the longest-serving independent in U.S congressional history.According to the biography of Bernie Sanders from the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, he was elected successfully as an independent candidate as mayor of Burlington, Vermont, from 1981 to 1989 and elected as an independent to the One Hundred Second and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1991-January 3, 2007). He was elected as an Independent to the United States Senate in 2006, reelected in 2012, and again in 2018. He is an Independent but often votes with the Democratic Party in the Senate. He has run with Democratic nominations in his two bids for the presidential nomination, in 2016 and currently for 2019.
