Moderna is planning a reformulated vaccine shot to specifically tackle the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Moderna has ramped up efforts to make a booster vaccine to combat new corona variants, including Omicron.A new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, first discovered in South Africa, has created havoc worldwide. It has been declared a variant of concern by WHO and classified as Omicron. The preliminary evidence indicated the variant contains 30 changes to spike protein that can bypass immunity and enter the human body. These mutations could evade vaccine defense and become more transmissible, thus reducing the effectiveness of existing covid vaccines.

As the virus evolves, vaccine makers have started efforts to combat the new strain by designing and testing new booster shots. Moderna has announced a three-pronged strategy to address SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern and is working on a new variant-specific vaccine candidate against Omicron. It tests adults with a higher dose of 100 µg dose of mRNA-1273 to determine if it can provide higher immunogenicity against the new variant. The company has said that if a new vaccine is to be made, it will be ready by early 2022.
