Scientists led by Prof. Dorothee Huchon have found Henneguya salminicola, the first-ever animal that does not need oxygen.

A tweet by Tel Aviv University's official Twitter account and a video uploaded by Crux on 26 February 2020, confirms the claim.

A tweet by Tel Aviv University's official Twitter account and a video uploaded by Crux on 26 February 2020, confirms the claim.Life science researchers led by Prof. Dorothee Huchon from the school of Zoology at Tel Aviv University discovered the 10- celled parasitic organism called Henneguya salminicola which is found in the muscles of Salmon. While assembling the Henneguya genome, Huchon found that it did not include a mitochondrial genome the powerhouse of the cell where oxygen is captured to make energy, so its absence indicated that the animal was not breathing oxygen. The findings concluded that the animal itself, a 'myxozoan relative' of jellyfish and corals, apparently gave up on breathing and consuming oxygen in order to produce energy, somewhere along its evolutionary track.
