Despite the mandatory quarantine norm, a 47-year-old U.K returnee who tested COVID-positive managed to flee to Andhra Pradesh via train. A native of Rajahmundry, returned to India on Dec. 21, 2020, from the U.K and gave her swab samples for tests. Before the results came, she left the airport and boarded the Delhi-Visakhapatnam train. The woman tested positive, but the officials were unsure whether it is for the old or new variant. After the authorities tried to contact her and her family, the woman switched off her phone, the Times of India reported. Andra Pradesh health officials lodged a complaint with Rajahmundry police on Dec. 23, 2020. Officials said that the woman’s action was dangerous as she could come in contact with anyone on the 1800 km long journey.

Rajahmundry health authorities and police officials said Delhi airport officials alerted the Andhra health department about the woman. The woman's address was traced with her passport's help, and a watch was kept at the house as per the New Indian Express's report.

Andhra health department officials told The Print the woman was asymptomatic and was accompanied by her 22-year old son, who went to Delhi to pick her up. The duo was immediately taken to the local government hospital and put under quarantine. The woman claimed she was asked to go home by Delhi authorities. Andhra health officials are checking with Delhi authorities to ascertain her claims. She is currently under quarantine at Rajahmundry Government Hospital.
