President Trump baseless claims that Democrats want to shut down churches permanently. There is no evidence that Dems want to do what is being claimedOn Oct. 7, in his tweet, US President Trump shared a video and claimed that police officers are arresting a pastor for holding a church service. Trump further claimed that Democrats want to shut churches down. However, that is not true. The video shared by Trump actually that shows an anti-mask protest in Moscow, Idaho. Three protesters were arrested on suspicion of resisting or obstructing police after violating the town’s social distancing order — not for holding a church service. The Moscow City Council passed an order extending the mask order to Jan. 5. Ben Zornes, pastor at Christ Church and the event organizer, told the Moscow-Pullman Daily News that the Sept. 23 psalm-singing event was aimed at protesting what he called a “largely groundless” mask order.
There is no evidence that Democrats are calling for churches to be permanently closed. Many states have passed coronavirus-related restrictions, including those governed by Republicans. Churches haven’t been singled out — in fact, they’ve been exempted from restrictions in some states.
