The death rate among COVID-19 patients put on ventilators at BMCRI is very high compared to countries like the U.S., Italy and the U.K.The Victoria Hospital, which is attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, has seen a 97% death rate among patients put on ventilators as told by Dr Smitha Segu, nodal officer of the hospital. She said that 92 patients had required intubation to help in breathing with 89 of them dying. She reasoned that high mortality among patients was due to very late referrals and 95% of the fatalities had comorbidities, while around 30% were above 60.

In comparison, the mortality among patients, who received advanced respiratory or ventilator support in the hospitals of U.S. ranges from 24.5–96.7, between 30.5–84.5 in UK while in Italy it is around 25.6–83.8.
