The Trump Administration has increased the budget for the military, but has not completely rebuilt the forces. On January 8, 2020, Donald Trump claimed that he completely rebuilt the US military at the cost of $2.5 trillion. However, this is an exaggeration as the number, $2.5 trillion, is a sum of the total defense budget from every year under his administration. Furthermore, out of the $2.5 trillion, only $419 billion has been spent by the Pentagon on procurement of new weapons and infrastructure, on top of the $143.5 billion appropriated by Congress for the 2020 fiscal year. The rest of the money, reportedly, has been directed towards research and development, military personnel, and operation and maintenance costs, among other things. Additionally, during a press conference shared by Defense News, Retired General Jack Keane, the former Army Vice Chief of Staff, stated that the US military is a long way from being rebuilt as of December 2018. However, Keane clarified that the US military had observed increased readiness and additional funding for enhancing capabilities.
