The decision was taken after Congress's poor showing in the local body elections, and factional feud in the party intensified. The party also decided that they will not project a Chief Ministerial candidate to avoid an internal showdown before the elections. Senior leader A K Antony said that the priority is to win the elections with a comfortable majority, and all leaders will work together. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will assume a lead role in the poll campaign.
