Minutes before Vikas Dubey's killing, he was made to switch vehicles.

The news reports that Dubey was seen traveling in a Tata Safari earlier and the vehicle which turtled before the encounter was a Mahindra TUV300. Vikas Dubey, the main accuse in the Kanpur murder case, was killed in a police encounter on the morning of July 10. On July 9, the Madhya Pradesh Police caught him at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain and handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police. According to the statement issued by the Police, Dubey tried to escape by snatching the weapon of one of the police officials. UP Additional Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar, said that the police fired at him and he got injured. Later, he was taken to a government hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors.

Reports claimed that Dubey was seen in a different car than the one which overturned before the encounter. Dubey was reportedly seen traveling in a safari car earlier, and the vehicle which turned upside-down before the encounter was a TUV300. It was also reported that police in Sachendi area of Kanpur stopped some media vehicles, who were following the convoy, while bringing back Vikas Dubey from Madhya Pradesh, before the encounter. The Uttar Pradesh police, however, denied the switching of vehicles. Since there is no concrete proof to show the switching of vehicles, this claim cannot be objectively verified.
