The University Grants Commission's official website confirms that India currently has 23 fake universities across eight states.The University Grants Commission (UGC) on 23 July 2019 released a list of 23 fake universities currently operating across India. The Commission said that these 23 unrecognized institutions are from 8 states namely Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharastra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Puducherry continue functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, without having clearance or approval from UGC.
