World Health Organization and Reuters support the claim that plasma therapy treatment is useful in treating patients with the severe viral infection.

World Health Organization and Reuters support the claim that plasma therapy treatment is useful in treating patients with the severe viral infection. In a press conference Dr Mike Ryan, WHO Executive Director for Health Emergencies, and Dr Sylvie Briand, Head of Global Infectious Hazard Preparedness, on 17 February 2020, stated that the use of convalescent plasma or hyperimmune globulin has been part of the treatment for severe infectious diseases going back almost to the beginning of when the viral infection was understood. Reuters reports that doctors in Shanghai are using infusions of blood plasma from the patients who have recovered from disease as they have permanent antibodies generated by the immune system floating in their blood plasma.

To turn that into a drug, the plasma is harvested, tested for safety, and purified to isolate those protective antibodies. Then it is injected into a new patient, this is called as the 'plasma-derived therapy' also known as convalescent plasma which provides 'passive immunity' this is administered to the patients until their immune system can generate its antibodies.
