He is the first Communist candidate to participate in a major U.S. election since 1984. Helali has said that he wants to abolish the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), that he is against racial violence and discrimination and that there has to be equality among all people regardless of their race, skin color and religion. Helali has said that he is concerned about a new Cold War emerging against Russia and China and wants to bring all troops home so the U.S. can reinvest "trillions" of dollars. He has also said that if elected, everyone in Vermont would be guaranteed a job.
