Actor Rajinikanth had told that 'anti-social elements may have been involved in the Tuticorin violence, but it cannot be presently verified. On May 30, 2018, the actor Rajinikanth had stated that the 'antisocial elements' may have played a part in the Tuticorin anti-Sterlite protest turning violent. Rajinikanth was addressing the media after visiting the victims at the Tuticorin hospital. Around 13 people were killed in the police shootout that followed. The center had sought a detailed report into the incident and called for actions to restore normalcy in the state.

The Tamilnadu state government had appointed a retired judge Aruna Jagadeeshan to oversee the investigations into the incident in Tuticorin. Actor Rajinikanth's remarks about the violence resulted in him being summoned in Feb. 2020. But the actor managed to evade the summons, and the special counsel has now indicated that Rajinikanth may be summoned again in Jan. 2021.

The one-person special counsel has not yet established the involvement of anti-social elements. The investigation into the Tuticorin is still ongoing, and a detailed report can only be expected after the final findings are publicized.
