A chicken was infected with Covid-19 in Bengaluru.

While chickens can carry strains of coronaviruses, there is no evidence of chickens being infected by the specific strain COVID-19.

While chickens can carry strains of coronaviruses, there is no evidence of chickens being infected by the specific strain COVID-19.According to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that cause diseases in animals and humans. In animals, coronaviruses can cause diarrhoea in cows and pigs, and upper respiratory disease in chickens. However, no case of chickens carrying the specific strain of Covid-19 has come to light.

Further, according to a booklet on Covid-19 released by AIIMS, there is no conclusive evidence that properly cooked food (including chicken, eggs and meat) transmits the disease. A press release by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying reports has also dispelled fears that Covid-19 has infected chickens and urged citizens not to believe rumors circulating on social media.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation. For reliable advice on COVID-19 including symptoms, prevention and available treatment, please refer to the World Health Organisation or your national healthcare authority.
