The Bombay High Court directed the Mumbai Police to submit its inspection papers related to its investigation into the TRP scam by Nov. 5, 2020.On Oct. 8, 2020, the Mumbai police claimed that some TV channels in Mumbai were manipulating TRP ratings. Addressing this issue in a press conference, the police commissioner said that the police had received complaints from BARC India (viewership measurement agency), Hansa, a consumer insights company, and one of BARC vendors about suspicious trends and activities. They arrested a former Hansa employee and recovered Rs 20 lakh from his bank account and another Rs 8.5 lakh from his bank locker based on the complaints. This money was supposed to be used to pay people to turn on their TV and watch Republic TV. The police commissioner named Arnab Goswami, who owns the news channel Republic TV, and two small Marathi TV channels Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema, in the alleged scam.
On Oct. 19, 2020, the Bombay High Court asked the Mumbai Police to issue summons to Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami if he is proposed to be added as an accused in the FIR in the TRP (Television Rating Point) manipulation case. A division bench of justices S S Shinde and M S Karnik said if summoned, Goswami shall appear before the police and cooperate with the investigation. The Court also directed police to submit for its perusal investigation papers concerning the case in a sealed cover by Nov. 5 when it would hear the matter. The Court also said that it would like to peruse the investigation papers and see what probe has been conducted from Oct. 19 until the next hearing date.
