The party leaders of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) had called for a bandh in Bihar to register their protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The Parliament of India passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on December 11, 2019. It amended the Citizenship Act, 1955, by providing a path to Indian citizenship for illegal migrants of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christians from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The amendment was widely criticized for discriminating based on religion, particularly for excluding Muslims. Continuous protests erupted against the CAA in several states across India. In Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal supporters blocked highways at Darbhanga and Vaishali after the party called for a day-long 'Bihar-Bandh' against CAA. At Darbhanga, RJD workers and supporters protested bare chest, sloganeering against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the central government. They blocked the highway by burning tires. While at Vaishali, the route was blocked by the RJD workers with the buffaloes.
RJD leader Tejaswhi Yadav also stood with protesters in Shanti Bagh, half a kilometer from Gandhi Maidan, where Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Yogi Adityanath had addressed a pro-CAA rally earlier in the day. He also appealed to party leaders and workers to participate in bandh peacefully.
Therefore, the Rashtriya Janata Dal party participated in a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register for Citizens (NRC).
