The legislative assembly election will be held in a single phase on April 6, for 234 seats, along with a by-election to Kanyakumari's Lok Sabha seat.On February 26, 2021, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for the assembly elections of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.

The assembly elections in Tamil Nadu will be held in a single phase on April 6, 2021, for 234 seats. The results would be announced on May 2 for all five states. There would be 8 phase elections in West Bengal from March 27 to April 29, 2021.

The by-election for Kanyakumari's Lok Sabha seat would also be held on April 6, which became necessary due to the demise of Congress MP H Vasanthakumar, The Times of India reported.

The 2021 assembly election would be held between the two major political parties, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Stalin, and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), led by Palaniswami. While Congress joined hands with DMK, the BJP supports AIADMK.
