State revenue collection missed the target and all recruitments were withheld due to the impact of COVID-19 on Karnataka’s economy.

State revenue collection missed the target and all recruitments were withheld due to the impact of COVID-19 on Karnataka’s economy. To control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in India, the central government imposed a nation-wide lockdown on March 25, 2020. This negatively impacted Karnataka’s economy as there has been a shortfall of revenue collection in the state since March 2020.

There has been a shortfall of tax collection in the state, and industries reported a 32% job loss. The state also lost a significant amount of revenue from liquor collection. The pandemic also impacted the Department of Stamps and Registration. It only collected between ₹800 crores and ₹900 crores a month, and recruitments were also withheld in the state. A research report showed an 80% loss of sales tax and value-added tax (VAT) revenue per month during the lockdown in the state and a 0. 25% revenue impact as a percentage of state’s revenue receipts, which stood at ₹ 47,319 crores.

Overall Karnataka lost the overall revenue collection target by ₹4,536 crores.
