India was among the eight countries that attended the military celebrations on March 27, 2021, in Myanmar’s capital Naypyitaw.Myanmar's military took control of the country in a coup after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected political leaders on February 1, 2021. More than 400 protestors have been killed as calls for the return of democratic rule have intensified.

Amid the crisis, the Myanmar military celebrated the 76th anniversary of Armed force day on March 27, 2021, to commemorate the army’s rebellion against Japanese occupation during the second world war. The annual event features a large-scale military parade in the capital city, Naypyitaw. Reportedly eight countries, namely Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, participated in the parade. Pro-democracy protestors of Myanmar condemned India’s presence at the parade on social media.

Reports by the Hindu and Indian Express have quoted government officials who said diplomatic relations between both the countries continue, and that as per norms, the Defence Attache at the Embassy attended the parade.
