The Delhi government sanctioned a new excise policy on March 22, 2021, to lower the legal drinking age from 25 to 21.Manish Sisodia, Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister, announced that the minimum age for liquor consumption in Delhi was lowered from 25 to 21 after the Delhi Cabinet approved a new Excise Policy. While announcing the decision, Sisodia said that there would be no government liquor stores in the city and that new liquor shops would not be opened in Delhi. He added that the government ran 60 percent of liquor shops in Delhi and that there is an expectation that the new Excise Policy would increase revenue by 20 percent.
The policy was suggested after a government committee made the decision and reduced the number of dry days to three per year.
The timings of bars in restaurants and clubs may be increased from 1 am to 3 am with an additional fee payment. Sisodia stated that about 2,000 illegal liquor outlets in Delhi are run from houses and godowns. The new policy was formulated to put an end to it.
