Earlier his administration announced that drugmaker Merck & Co. would help produce rival Johnson & Johnson’s newly approved shot. The vaccination has been given a boost, as the third vaccine by Johnson & Johnson is now available for emergency use and has been being shipped across the country. Although there has been a sharp fall in confirmed cases since the start of the year - the figure of 68,000 a day now is well down on the 8 January peak of 300,000 - the number has leveled out over the past week, fuelling fears of another wave of the virus. The president announced a new partnership between competitors J&J and pharmaceutical giant Merck, which would help J&J produce more of its single-shot vaccine that was authorized over the weekend for emergency use. Biden's end of May timeline doesn't mean all American adults will necessarily be vaccinated by then, as administering the shots will take longer.
