The plan angered the fans in England and protests took place against the proposal. It was also condemned by football authorities, politicians, and by UEFA league associations. The ESL format is criticized for its closed format, which could favor only the strongest, biggest clubs and against European football's established model.

Subsequently, all the top premier league teams announced that they would not participate in the tournament and apologized for their decision. The players had also expressed their reservations about participating in the league. With it, the league is now believed to be officially suspended.
