According to BBC, it's a suspicion that the Coronavirus may have escaped from a laboratory from Wuhan in central China, where the virus was first recorded. The supporters of the theory point at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), studying coronaviruses in bats for over a decade.

According to a report by Nature, most scientists believe that COVID-19 probably has a natural origin, and was transmitted from an animal to humans.

According to a U.S. intelligence report, in November 2019, three researchers at the Wuhan laboratory were treated in hospital just before the virus started spreading in humans across the city, the BBC report says.

On February 13, 2021, a Reuters report said that China refused to provide raw data on early COVID-19 cases to a World Health Organization-led team investigating the pandemic's origins. Dominic Dwyer, an Australian infectious diseases expert, made the allegation. According to Dwyer, the team requested raw patient data on 174 cases that China identified from the early phase of the outbreak in Wuhan in December 2019 but was only given a summary.

Another factor hinting at the lab leak theory is that in 2013, the WIV collected a sample from a mineshaft, which caused pneumonia-like illness, and afflicted six miners the year before, the Print reported. In addition, according to the report, the bat-origin Coronavirus —RaTG13 is over 96 percent similar to SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19.

However, though there is evidence of the lab leak theory, there are sufficient counter-arguments and other theories. The pieces of evidence linking the virus' origin to the Wuhan lab have not yet been accepted by the global community.
