In RSF's annual report, India dropped two positions on the global press freedom index to number 142 out of 180 countries.The World Press Freedom Index 2020 reported that compared to six murders of journalists in 2018, no journalist was murdered in 2019, and its media situation has strengthened. However, continuing infringements on press freedom, including police brutality against journalists, political dissidents', and retaliatory attacks by criminal gangs or crooked city authority officials, have taken place. India was on the 140th position in 2019; it has dropped to the 142nd position in 2020.

Reporters Without Borders or Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) is a non-profit group based in Paris, dedicated to monitoring and countering the violence against journalists worldwide. For the fourth year running, Norway is ranked first in the table. China is just three positions above the 180th position, and North Korea is in the 180th position.
