The Chicago government issued a new stay-at-home advisory, urging citizens to cancel "normal" Thanksgiving gatherings. With the number of COVID-19 cases spiking in recent weeks, the Chicago government has issued a 30-day advisory asking residents to stay at home from Monday, 16 November. The advisory states that residents should avoid travel, restrict visitors to the home, and cancel "normal" Thanksgiving celebrations. This year, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, 26 November.

Lori Lightfoot, the Mayor of Chicago, announced a new strategy called "Protect Chicago" that includes new limits on gatherings with a few exceptions given to businesses. This comes as public health officials reported that, in 24 hours, there were 11,028 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in the state of Illinois. Officials say that the city has reached a critical point in fighting the second wave of virus infection.
