Only 29% of the Indian population follows a vegetarian diet.

Indian government's 2014 survey revealed that 71% of the population to be non-vegetarian, but current data in recent years is unavailable.

Indian government's 2014 survey revealed that 71% of the population to be non-vegetarian, but current data in recent years is unavailable.According to the Sample Registration System Baseline Survey 2014, 29% of the country's population were vegetarians. India has had the highest number of vegetarians globally, with more than 400 million people identifying as vegetarians. Various surveys have shown that the vegetarian population's estimated percentage is between 23% and 37%.

However, there is a lack of updated data since the 2014 survey to verify the estimate of the vegetarian population in 2020. The next national survey is going to be held in 2024. And since trends have changed a lot since 2014, we can expect the numbers to change or differ from the present.
