India is one of the top producers of spices globally and accounts for about 50 percent of its trade globally.India produces about 75 of the 109 varieties of spices approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). India has consistently been one of the top producers of spices globally, exporting them to 185 countries. China and the United States are its top importers.

As recent as 2018, China exported the most spices worldwide, worth about $582 million, followed by India at $373 million.

During 2019-20, India exported 225 spice items against 219 items in 2018-19. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry affiliated India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) has said that it accounts for half of the global trading in spices.

India's chili, mint products, cumin, spice oils & oleoresins, and turmeric were the significant contributors in the spices basket. Cumin was the second-most exported spice. Ginger showed the maximum increase compared to 2018-19 quantities.
