A U.S. court has sentenced Derek Chauvin to 22 and a half years in jail for murdering George Floyd.Derek, the former police officer, was convicted of second-degree murder in April for the murder of George Floyd, an African American. The verdict fell short of the 30 years as prosecutors had requested. The prosecution argued that Chauvin acted with cruelty and abused his position of authority. It was the longest sentence a police officer has received in the history of the state of Minnesota.
The video of Chauvin kneeling on the neck of Floyd for more than nine minutes which led to the death caused outrage and huge protests across the U.S. The three other officers involved in Floyd’s murder will face trial shortly.
