He served as MLA from the Jalukbari constituency in Assam from 2001 till 2015 from Indian National Congress and May 2016 as a Bharatiya Janata Party member. Himanta has been vocal against nepotism and had said it was the hallmark of their administration.

Recently Himanta was seen accompanied by his son Nandil Biswa Sarma during an election campaign at Bhergaon. The media stated, 'Like father like son,' and many claimed that this might probably the first step towards introducing him to mainstream politics and grooming his successor.

However, we did not find any statement by the minister in favor of his son despite his participation in the election rally. There have been no indications suggesting the minister's plans to introduce his son into politics.
