The club has paid over 421 million pounds for buying defenders in four years under Guardiola. On September 23, 2020, the club signed an agreement with player Ruben Dias from the Portuguese football club 'Benfica' for £68 million. An amount of 65 million pounds was spent for signing Joao Cancelo and Aymeric Laporte. Benjamin Mendy, John Stones, and Kyle Walker were the other players who joined the team for over 50 million pounds.
Other defenders signed during the Guardiola years include Joao Cancelo for $71.5 million from Juventus in August 2019, Danilo for $33 million from Real Madrid in July 2017, and John Stones $61 million from Everton in August 2016.
