A majority in the Sri Lankan Parliament passed the port city bill after adding the amendments suggested by the Supreme Court. The Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill was introduced in the Sri Lankan Parliament to establish a Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The $1.4 billion project was launched in 2014. The opposition party had raised concerns regarding the bill, saying that it undermined the country’s sovereignty. Some elements of the bill were ruled invalid by the Supreme court as it conflicted with the constitution.
However, the bill was passed with a 149-58 vote in Sri Lanka’s 225-member Parliament after making it suitable amendments. The MP's supported the bill as they expect the project to create job prospects and increased foreign investments.
