Congress leader Rahul Gandhi acknowledged that he had met Chinese envoy over the Doklam border standoff between India and China in 2017.Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had met the then Chinese envoy to India, Luo Zhaohui, on July 8, 2017, amid the escalated border tensions at Doklam. Eventually, the meeting was denied by all the senior Congress members, but the subject came under fire when the Chinese Embassy posted a press release on their website, which mentioned the meeting with Rahul Gandhi. However, the press release was later deleted. After the prolonged denial, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewal and Rahul Gandhi accepted that the meeting was held not only with Chinese ambassador but also with Bhutan and ex-NSA chief Shiv Shankar Menon. It was further cleared that the meeting was scheduled out of courtesy because they had come to meet Rahul Gandhi.
A military standoff took place between India and China in 2017 when China attempted to extend a road on the Doklam plateau southwards near the Doka La pass, and Indian troops moved in to prevent the Chinese.
