Double Check: Fact Checking Biden's Big Day at the DNC Finale

DNC2020 has finally wrapped, and Logically has been watching every speech, every pre-recorded video package, and every reactive tweet to find the claims, arguments, threats and promises to send to our dedicated team of fact checkers. The results of the final day are here, and as you might expect from the headline evening, there was plenty to work with. Below are a selection of highlights from our fact checking coverage of the final day of DNC2020.

Economic growth was higher under Obama and Biden than it was under Trump

PARTLY TRUE

 

Quarterly GDP growth was higher under the Obama administration. However, annual GDP growth, preferred as a measure by some economists, was higher under the Trump administration. Obama starting his first term during the Great Recession, and Trump ending his first term during the COVID-19 pandemic make comparing the relative economic performance under the two presidents extremely difficult.

51,000,000 ballots are being sent to citizens who haven’t requested one, many of who don’t even exist

 

FALSE

 

President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that mail-in ballot increases voter fraud. In his most recent accusation, he said that 51,000,000 ballots had been sent to citizens in the U.S who have not requested one, and many who don't exist. In fact, several measures are built into the process to ensure that ballots are only sent to voters who are registered and require voter signature.

72% of Americans think this pandemic is the worst time they have ever experienced

TRUE

On the 4th night of the Democratic National Convention, Andrew Yang said, '72% of Americans believe that this is the worst time we have ever experienced.' The American Psychological Association in June 2020 published a report citing two surveys conducted by Harris Poll, which were carried out between May 21 and June 3. One of the surveys focuses on the coronavirus, and the other focuses on the civil unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd. Results from both surveys show that most Americans think the country is at its lower point in living memory.

Children can stay on their parents' health insurance policy until they turn 26

TRUE

 

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services states that under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) if parents’ health insurance plan covers children, they can add or keep their children on the health insurance policy until they turn 26 years old. Children can join or remain on a parent’s plan even if they are married, not living with them, attending school, financially independent, or are eligible to enroll in their employer’s plan.

Joe Biden plans to invest $2 trillion in infrastructure to combat climate change

TRUE

 

On July 14, 2020, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden announced a $2 trillion clean energy and infrastructure plan. The Clean Energy section of Joe Biden's campaign page says, 'Biden will make a $2 trillion accelerated investment, with a plan to deploy those resources over his first term, setting the U.S on an irreversible course to meet the ambitious climate progress that science demands.' The plan would also aim to achieve a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035 and net-zero emissions throughout the economy by 2050.

40 million Americans are at risk of losing their homes

On day 4 of the Democratic National Convention, Senator Cory Booker rightly claimed that 40 million Americans are at risk of losing their homes. According to a report from the Aspen Institute, forty million people in more than 17 million households may be at risk of eviction through the end of 2020 in the United States.

5.4 million Americans have lost their healthcare because of the coronavirus crisis

 

TRUE

 

The COVID-19 pandemic caused 5.4 million American workers to lose their health insurance between February and May 2020, according to Families USA.

Joe Biden called for a national mask mandate after accepting his nomination for President on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, ‘not as a burden, but to protect each other as a patriotic duty’.

Donald Trump drove his companies into bankruptcy six times

 

TRUE

 

Trump has previously claimed that he filed for bankruptcy for four of his companies. On Day 4 of the Democratic National Convention, Michael Bloomberg said that Trump had driven six of his companies into bankruptcy. We found that Bloomberg was right, and Trump filed for bankruptcy six times.

Beau Biden, the deceased son of Joe Biden, had prosecuted Dr. Earl Bradley, who had been charged with the molestation of 103 children.

Joe Biden wasn't born in Scranton, Pennsylvania

 

False

 

On August 20, 2020, President Donald Trump traveled to Old Forge, Pennsylvania, a small town situated approximately six miles away from the Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s childhood hometown Scranton. President Trump held a rally there hours before Biden was slated to accept his party’s nomination and deliver his formal address.

 

During the rally, Trump remarked that Biden wasn’t born in Scranton and that he had abandoned the town as he had lived there for only a short period. Besides Biden’s official campaign page, numerous records of his early life corroborate that he was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His father, Joe Sr., was once a sales manager at a car dealership in Scranton, but quit and the family eventually moved to Claymont, Delaware, when Biden was ten years old.

Steve Bannon was arrested by the USPS

 

TRUE

 

Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s former adviser, had been arrested on August 20, 2020, on charges of fraud by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The U.S. Department of Justice stated in a press release that Bannon and three others defrauded hundreds of thousands of donors connected with the 'We Build the Wall' campaign, which raised $25m.

Native Americans weren't guaranteed the right to vote in every state until 1962

 

TRUE

 

The Snyder Act of 1924 or the Indian Citizenship Act, signed by President Calvin Coolidge, admitted Native Americans born in the U.S. to full U.S. citizenship. The Fifteenth Amendment, passed in 1870, granted all U.S. citizens the right to vote regardless of race. However, under the Snyder Act, Native Americans were still prevented from participating in elections because the Constitution left it up to the states to decide who has the right to vote. After the 1924 citizenship bill, it still took over forty years for all fifty states to allow Native Americans to vote. 

 

Utah, in 1962 was the last state to enfranchise Native Americans.
