Double Check: Democratic National Convention 2020 - Day 1 Recap

Yesterday, the Democratic party held the first night of their virtual convention. Logically was on hand to live fact check the event and monitor social media activity, which turned up one extremely interesting trend, and several interesting claims which we sent to our team to fact check. The first night of DNC2020 was a little eerie, plagued by minor technical difficulties, some rather ham-fisted visual metaphors, and featuring a majority of speakers who were palpably uncomfortable talking straight to camera without the support of an enthusiastic crowd. However, in spite of these minor hiccups things could certainly have gone an awful lot worse for the DNC, and the relative paucity of both questionable claims from the DNC themselves, or of questionable claims made by the GOP in response to the event, speaks to how successfully managed the first night of the convention was.

Here is Logically’s round up of the claims worth checking from yesterday’s political events: Joe Biden’s interview with Cardi B, President Trump’s press conference in Minnesota, and of course, the virtual convention itself.

Joe Biden wants to 'Abolish the suburbs.'

False

Donald Trump falsely claimed that Joe Biden wants to abolish the suburbs. It is not clear what the claim would even mean if taken seriously; the most plausible reading of Trump’s jab against Biden seems to be as a dog-whistle to suburban families who may feel threatened by Biden’s policies promoting racial justice in housing.

Everybody who needed a ventilator got one in the United States.

Partly True

During the same press conference, President Trump made the bold claim that nobody who needed a ventilator during the COVID-19 pandemic went without one. While it’s certainly true that the U.S overcame the initial problem of a shortage of ventilators, it remains unclear whether everyone who needed a ventilator got one.

Joe Biden forgot how many grandchildren he has.

True

In a much publicised interview with Cardi-B, Joe Biden said he has five grandchildren. He actually has seven grandchildren.

58% of Biden voters say their vote is against Trump rather than for Biden

True

DNC2020 is Joe Biden’s big chance to drive up enthusiasm for his campaign. For the first time since Super Tuesday, the media’s attention is decisively his for the taking. Biden seems to have his work cut out for him going into the conventions, recent polling shows a higher percent of registered voters who support Joe Biden consider their vote to be in opposition to President Trump than in support of Biden. This is something which the first night of the convention seemed to take notice of and latch on to, but it may be concerning to Biden’s campaign if he can’t build up a greater degree of enthusiasm for his candidacy in its own right.
